Here in the Miami Valley we are coming to grips with the painful reality of suicide and the threat it poses to our loved ones and to the people we serve. No
matter who we are - teachers, students, healthcare providers, pastors, friends, or family members, we see the increasing incidents of suicide, and sadly many of us have personally experienced the
loss of someone to suicide. We recognize the need to identify at-risk individuals and connect them with the right resources, but we can also feel ill-equipped to provide the necessary
prevention, assessment, and intervention services that could save lives.
This workshop, presented by Ohio State University Professors Darcy and Paul Granello, will provide attendees with a clear and practical understanding of how to
work with suicidal individuals in a variety of settings as well as practical steps for implementing prevention programming. The morning session of the workshop will focus on training attendees
in suicide risk factors, warning signs, and prevention strategies. After a lunch provided by Ginghamsburg Church, the afternoon session will offer two separate tracks, one for mental health
professionals and another for school personnel and lay helpers, with content catered to your particular level of training and expertise. No matter your experience level or profession, the
information provided by the Granellos can equip you with effective strategies for identifying and helping suicidal individuals.

Morning Session: 9am - 12pm
The morning workshop will use the current research as well as the presenter’s own practice experience to help participants of all experience learn the basics of
suicide risk and warning signs. Participants will gain a broad based understanding of the complexity of suicide and learn how to engage in prevention strategies and programs.
Contents:
- Overview of suicide
- Understanding of risk factors, warning signs, and protective factors of suicide
- Role of individual and group risk factors
- Social and cultural factors associated with risk
- Case study in small groups
- Universal, selected, and indicated prevention and intervention protocol strategies
During lunch attendees will hear presentations from area organizations who are working to combat suicide in the Miami Valley.
TRACK 1: Suicide Assessment, Intervention, and Postvention for Mental Health Clinicians
The afternoon session is an advanced training for mental health professionals in any setting. Clinicians working with suicidal clients know that these are some of the
most complex and challenging cases and that conducting accurate assessments and developing appropriate intervention strategies can be extremely difficult. Yet most mental health professionals receive
very little training in suicide and much of the available training focuses heavily on theory with little practical application.
The presenters will provide concrete, practical information on suicide risk assessment and intervention. Participants will be given resources to conduct culturally
and developmentally appropriate risk assessments. They will learn a 7 step model for intervention that includes specific and concrete strategies for implementation as well as intervention guidelines
to coordinate strategies with treatment providers in the community for working with suicidal students, including reintegration strategies into the school after a hospitalization. Strategies for
postvention that minimize contagion will also be included.
TRACK 2: Suicide Gatekeeper Training for School Personnel and Lay Helpers
The good news is that with a few hours of training, we can help people recognize the risk factor for suicide, learn how to engage with empathy, practice ways to ask
directly about suicide, learn methods to communicate hope, and give very clear methods for accessing resources. This training is intended for all school and community personnel. The presenters will
teach a specific strategy for learning how to intervene that has the potential to save lives.
Each year in the United States, we lose over 45,000 lives to suicide, and more than 1.2 million people have a suicide attempt. Suicide rates are rising at an
alarming rate for middle age and older adults, particularly among men. Increasingly, however, anyone who spends time with young people also understands the importance of recognizing the risk factors
and warning signs for suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death for people ages 10-24, and the leading cause of death for children ages 10-14. Suicide deaths, however, represent only the
extreme end of the continuum. There are an estimated 5,240 suicide attempts each day by young people in grades 7-12.
